ViTAM  (TELEASSISTANCE MONITORING)

ViTAM has been conceived for the elderly, impaired, long-term care patients and socially excluded people to allow their interaction with administration (e.g. public health system and social workers), clinical staff (e.g. physicians, specialists, physiotherapists and nurses) and other users (e.g. relatives and other patients).

The main feature of ViTAM is a novel and versatile videoconferencing core, designed for desktop and “Tablet PC” terminals and running on most widespread operating systems (Windows, Mac OS X, Android and iOS) as a native or browser-based application. On the other hand, ViTAM offers an intuitive interface adapted to fit the requirements of different scenarios (e.g. multiconferencing, rendez-vous-based consultations). A unique characteristic of ViTAM is the ability to open video and audio from the specialist without any intervention from the patient side.

ViTAM can be easily extended to include additional features such as on demand cognitive activities, physical activities or biophysical measures by making use of external peripherals (i.e. USB, WiFi and Bluetooth devices).

ViTAM FUNCTIONALITIES AND SCENARIOS

  1. Videoconferencing. It is used from a novel and innovative perspective, enabling several operation modes:
    1. Consultation witrh waiting room: given an appointment, the patient accesses the application and waits until the professional is ready to assist them. Only when the professional is ready, the videoconference is started. This is the typical rendez-vous operation in real life, where patients wait in a waiting room for the doctor to be available for the consultation. The professional constantly monitors waiting patients and selects who is to be attended next.
    2. Call Center: the call centre acts as an integrated service that can be used to manage emergency calls and filter user requests according to the criteria of an intermediate health or social professional.
    3. Remote Camera Control: the patient is contacted by a professional or call centre. This scenario is foreseen for cases where alarms are involved, where the patient’s impairment is a barrier to use technology or when an intensive monitoring is needed.
    4. Single videoconferencing (1-1): a user has a set of contacts with which they are able to interact as long as they are all connected at the same time.
    5. Multi videoconferencing (N-N): useful to enable the practice of training or rehabilitation group sessions (e.g. occupational therapy) and medical or training sessions among professionals.
  2. Scheduling. VITAM provides an integrated calendar and visible reminders for clinical visits (appointments), prescription (drug ingestion) and group activities. Urgent messages are displayed on top of the application.
  3. Social relationships. Access and participation to chat.
  4. Telerehabilitation. Cognitive and physical exercises with real-time control by a professional.
  5. Telemonitoring. Sensors measures can be gathered and sent to external systems. VITAM can be connected to alarms and used as a surveillance camera.

POTENTIAL BENEFITS

ViTAM proves to be very useful from the economical, medical and social perspective, since: a) it reduces transportation and saves time both to professionals and patients; b) it makes the monitoring of patients more efficient, reducing personnel costs; c) it enables a closer remote monitoring of the patients; d) it improves compliance to the prescribed treatment or therapy; e) it alleviates the patients’ loneliness and depressive status and improves their emotional and social support thanks to their interaction with their families, social carers or psychologists; f) it improves the feeling of belonging to a group with similar problems and concerns thanks to the practice of multi videoconferencing training or rehabilitation group sessions (e.g. occupational therapy).

Moreover, tablet PCs enhance ubiquity and widen the target market from final users to health professionals with mobility requirements. Tablet PCs can be easily carried and can be charged, sustained and connected to external displays by using docks.
